Understanding the Cockapoo Coat
Cockapoos inherit coat traits from both Cocker Spaniels and Poodles, which means no two Cockapoos have exactly the same coat. Coats range from tight, curly (poodle-dominant) to loose, wavy (spaniel-dominant) to a mix of both. All types tend to grow continuously and are prone to matting, particularly behind the ears, in the armpits and around the collar.
Popular Cockapoo Haircut Styles
The Teddy Bear Cut
The most popular Cockapoo style in the UK. Hair is kept at an even medium length all over, with a rounded face and fluffy ears. It's easy to maintain and suits the Cockapoo's friendly expression.
The Puppy Cut
A shorter, more practical version of the teddy bear — great for summer or for owners who want low-maintenance grooming between appointments.
The Lamb Cut
Shorter body, fuller legs. Creates a classic poodle-inspired look that many Cockapoo owners love.
The Natural Style
Minimal trimming, allowing the coat to grow more naturally. Beautiful, but requires the most brushing between grooms to prevent severe matting.
How Often Does a Cockapoo Need Grooming?
Every 6–8 weeks is the recommended minimum. Many Cockapoo owners book every 5 weeks, particularly those keeping a longer style. Leaving it longer than 8 weeks frequently results in matting that requires shaving rather than styling — which is uncomfortable for the dog and disappointing for owners.
The golden rule: If you can feel resistance when running a comb through your Cockapoo's coat, mat formation has already begun. Book your appointment now and brush daily until then.
Brushing Between Grooms
Daily brushing is ideal for Cockapoos, even with short styles. Use a slicker brush and a metal comb, working section by section. Pay special attention to the ears, armpits, collar area and between the toes — the four zones where mats form first.
What to Ask Your Groomer
Bring a reference photo. Tell your groomer how much time you spend brushing between appointments — this will help them recommend a realistic length. Be honest: there's no point requesting a long natural look if daily brushing isn't happening.
